There are several key areas our team is expertly skilled at serving and treating our clients. While our services are not limited to these areas, Chrysalis Center specializes in:

Bariatrics

Bariatric surgery is used to treat and prevent metabolic diseases in higher weight individuals and is effective in reducing associated medical conditions to improve quality of life and patient well-being. Bariatric surgery success is maximized through a team approach, including a surgeon, a registered dietitian, and a mental health provider – all of whom specialize in bariatrics.

At the Chrysalis Center, we partner with the local and regional surgical practices and Novant Medical Center, which is accredited as a center of excellence in bariatric surgery to provide high quality, expert level care. Our executive director is a widely recognized speaker and educator who is considered a thought leader in the realm of bariatric-related eating disorder and addiction treatment and recovery.

Our multidisciplinary team offers the following comprehensive bariatric services:

  • Preoperative psychological evaluations
  • Preoperative nutrition education
  • Pre- and post-operative individual therapy
  • Pre- and post-operative nutritional counseling
  • Intensive outpatient treatment for postoperative eating disorders
  • Post-operative group counseling and workshop series as part of the B.A.R.I.Well (Bariatric Aftercare and Recovery Initiative) program

As eating disorder specialists, we are acutely aware of the presence of both pre-and post-surgical eating disorders and believe that identifying and treating eating disorders to remission is critical for the long-term success of patients. We do not stigmatize or shame patients who have elected to undergo MBS and desire to partner with them and their healthcare team to maximize outcomes and reduce potential complications.

Nutrition

Nutritional Counseling is a collaborative process where you work with a dietitian to better understand your relationship with food, learn your thoughts and values related to food and your body, and correlate how self-care affects the whole body. Nutritional counseling improves self-awareness through science-based education as well as increased mindfulness about yourself and your habits. The potential outcome from nutrition sessions is that you learn to feel in charge of your food choices and your own body. You may enjoy improved mood and increased energy as a result. Other goals or results (depending on what issues are being addressed) include: discovering how to incorporate a variety of wholesome foods in moderation, experiencing metabolic recovery, reversing symptoms of malnutrition, learning to rely on internal cues of hunger and fullness, and learning to eat nutritious meals while also enjoying them.

Our dietitians have specialized training and experience treating a wide variety of medical and nutritional issues. They offer the following services:

  • Individual and family nutritional counseling
  • Grocery store tours
  • Meal outings
  • Onsite meal support groups
  • Detailed nutritional analysis
  • Mindful eating activities
  • Pre-operative nutrition seminars for bariatric surgery patients
  • Nutrition education groups for post-bariatric surgery patients
  • MedGem weight management solutions
  • DNA testing for wellness plans

Our mental health therapists are equipped to treat a variety of issues including (but not limited to) anxiety, depression, trauma, substance use, addiction, relationship struggles, college students, ADHD, OCD, parenting, behavior issues, chronic pain, divorce, anger management, geriatrics, and more!
