There are several key areas our team is expertly skilled at serving and treating our clients. While our services are not limited to these areas, Chrysalis Center specializes in:

Eating Disorders

A hallmark of our practice is our comprehensive eating disorder program. We treat eating disorders as a primary diagnosis while also addressing other conditions and underlying issues such as depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, and substance abuse, among others. We have treated thousands of individuals with eating disorders since 2003. At any given time, at least 40% of our client population struggles with some form of an eating disorder.

Clients may participate in any of the following components of treatment that we offer:

  • Specialized assessments
  • Personalized treatment plans for individual, family, and group counseling
  • On-site nutritional education and counseling
  • Referrals to, and collaboration with, other providers and higher levels of care
  • Intensive Outpatient Program

Bariatric surgery, or weight loss surgery, can be a highly successful and rewarding treatment for obesity and associated medical diseases. Weight loss surgery success is maximized through a team approach, including your surgeon, a registered dietitian, and a mental health provider – all of whom specialize in bariatrics. At the Chrysalis Center, we are proudly affiliated with the local surgical practices and New Hanover Regional Medical Center, which is accredited as a center of excellence in bariatric surgery by the American Society of Bariatric Surgery and Blue Cross Blue Shield.

Our multidisciplinary team offers the following comprehensive bariatric services:

  • Pre-operative psychological evaluations
  • Pre-operative nutritional seminars
  • Pre- and post-operative individual therapy
  • Pre- and post-operative nutritional counseling
  • Intensive outpatient service
  • Post-operative group counseling and workshop series as part of the B.A.R.I.Well (Bariatric Aftercare and Recovery Initiative) program

Nutritional Counseling is a collaborative process where you work with a dietitian to better understand your relationship with food, learn your thoughts and values related to food and your body, and correlate how self-care affects the whole body. Nutritional counseling improves self-awareness through science-based education as well as increased mindfulness about yourself and your habits. The potential outcome from nutrition sessions is that you learn to feel in charge of your food choices and your own body. You may enjoy improved mood and increased energy as a result. Other goals or results (depending on what issues are being addressed) include: discovering how to incorporate a variety of wholesome foods in moderation, experiencing metabolic recovery, reversing symptoms of malnutrition, learning to rely on internal cues of hunger and fullness, and learning to eat nutritious meals while also enjoying them.

Our dietitians have specialized training and experience treating a wide variety of medical and nutritional issues. They offer the following services:

  • Individual and family nutritional counseling
  • Grocery store tours
  • Meal outings
  • Onsite meal support groups
  • Detailed nutritional analysis
  • Mindful eating activities
  • Pre-operative nutrition seminars for weight loss surgery patients
  • Nutrition education groups for post-weight loss surgery patients
  • MedGem weight management solutions

Due to the complex relationship between eating disorders, addictions, and traumatic experiences, we have broadened our clinical scope to include specialized services for survivors of trauma. There is an abundance of research regarding the co-occurring relationship between these mental health issues, and we have found that many of our clients suffer from unresolved traumatic experiences. Specialized services for survivors of all forms of trauma and abuse include:

  • Individual and family therapy
  • Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy, and Prolonged Exposure

According to The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM), addiction affects every part of a person’s life as well as people close to them. It is a chronic, progressive disease that is biological, psychological, social, and spiritual in nature. Without treatment and recovery, the end result can be permanent disability or death. Chrysalis has licensed clinical addictions specialists on staff that can treat substance use disorders of all types. We also have a specialized group for weight loss surgery patients struggling with transfer addiction or re-emergence of food addiction.

If you’re ready to receive help in one of these areas, or know someone who could benefit from our specialty services, please call the Chrysalis Center today at (910) 790-9500.
